WINDOWS ERRORS
WINDOWS PROTECTION ERRORS APPEARING IN:
Windows 95
Windows 98
Windows Millennium Edition

**Please note**
This information is here only to help you in discovering possible reasons for the "WINDOWS PROTECTION ERROR" you are receiving. As with everything, there are multiple possibilities and these are only a few of the more common ones.


BASICS
WINDOWS PROTECTION ERRORS can occur under any of these conditions:

- if the registry is damaged.
-if there is an I/O address conflict or RAM address conflict.
-if there is a real-mode driver and protected-mode driver conflict.
-if either the Win.com or Command.com file are infected with a virus or damaged.
-if a protected-mode driver is loaded form the system.ini file and the drive has already been initialized.
-if the Plug & Play feature on a computer's BIOS is not working correctly.
-if the computer contains a malfunctioning cache or malfunctioning memory.
-if the motherboard is not working properly.
-if there is an incorrect CMOS setting for a built-in peripheral device. (ie. CPU timing or hard drive)
-if you have installed Office 97 and are using Novell Client 32 software.


Examples of exact messages and there cause follow.
ERROR

"Windows Protection Error" After Upgrading to Windows 98

After you upgrade Microsoft Windows 95 to Windows 98 and restart your computer, you may receive the following error message:

" Windows Protection Error You must restart your computer. "

Also

Your computer may then turn off automatically.



CAUSE
This behavior can occur when all of the following conditions exist:
You have installed Windows 98 on a Toshiba Libretto 50CT, 70CT or 100CT computer.
Your computer has a standard port replicator. You have a serial mouse attached to the standard port replicator. The Windows 98 serial port driver (Serial.vxd) conflicts with Toshiba's power management driver (Pwrsave.vxd).

ERROR

*This does not apply to Windows 95*
When you try to shut down a computer that is running Windows Millennium Edition (Me) or Windows 98, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

The floppy disk drive light may turn on.
You may receive a "Windows Protection Error" error message.
Your computer may stop responding (hang) while displaying the "Windows is Shutting Down" message.


CAUSE
Antivirus Program Causes Computer to Stop Responding When You Shut Down.
This issue can occur if you are running a McAfee or Norton antivirus program that is configured to scan your floppy disk drive when you shut down your computer.

SOLUTION

To resolve this issue, contact the manufacturer of your antivirus program to inquire about the availability of a fix for this problem.

ERROR
"While initializing device (name of item) Windows Protection Error"
-or-
"Windows Protection Error"

When you start Windows, you may receive one of these error messages.
When you shut down your computer, you may receive the following error message:
"Windows Protection Error"

CAUSE
This behavior can occur when a when your computer loads or unloads a virtual device driver (VxD). In many cases, the VxD that did not load or unload is mentioned in the error message. In other cases, you may not be able to determine which VxD caused the behavior.
