"Some people have told me they don't think a fat penguin
really embodies the grace of Linux, which just tells me that they have
never seen an angry penguin charging at them in excess of 100 mph.
They'd be a lot more careful about what they say if they had." -
Linus Torvalds, Creator of Linux
Linux, You Say?
That's right. Adare Enterprises provides
support to business and home-based Linux users. Perhaps you're wondering why we like Linux. Well, Linux has several advantages over other
operating systems like Windows '98/ME and Windows NT
such as:
- Linux is a much more stable environment, where a program
crash is much less likely to cause a system crash
- Linux creates a much more reliable server, lasting for
hundreds of days where Windows systems need to be rebooted regularily
- Superior networking capabilities allowing for greater
sharing between computers
- Upgrading with Linux is simple due to Linux's high standard of
system maintenance, whereas Windows-based systems often
require a complete hard drive format to be successfully upgraded
- Linux provides true multi-tasking
- The flexibility of the graphical user interface called 'X'
makes it much more powerful than Windows
- The Linux source code is made available allowing for user
modification to meet specific needs
- Linux allows for multiple operating systems to reside on
one machine
As well as a Windows-type interface, there is also a powerful
command-line interface. The rich syntax of the command-line
interface adds to the flexibility of Linux. So, there you have it;
Linux is a faster, more flexible, more reliable, true multi-tasking
operating system. Surely, though, you ask "What's the catch? This
sounds too good to be true." There are certain disadvantages to Linux.
Linux does not offer a structured technical support line. Through
newsgroups, though, the user has available at their fingertips the
expertise of millions of professionals world-wide willing to lend a
helping hand. Also, there is
a lesser availability of commercial products for Linux, but as Linux is
more and more widely accepted more software companies promise Linux
versions of their products. Linux is slowly gaining acceptance in the
computing world as the Operating System of choice to get the job done
-- quickly and reliably.
