INVALID PAGE FAULTS APPEARING IN:
Windows 95
Windows 98
Windows Millennium Edition

This information is here only to help you in discovering possible reasons for the "INVALID PAGE FAULT" you are receiving. As with everything, there are multiple possiblities and these are only a few of the more common ones.
Basics

xxxxx(program) caused an invalid page fault in module xxxxxxx at memory address(usually a set of numbers and letters).


Reason
One of the more common reasons for "Invalid Page Fault" messages is memory issues. Whether it be:

-an improper attempt to use random access memory.
- attempts to load data from virtual memory that it can not locate. Often occuring when areas of the virtual memory become corrupted.
- the virtual memory becomes unstable due to shortage of RAM.
- the virtual memory becomes unstable due to shortage of hard drive space.
- the virtual memory has been corrupted by a program.
- the program is attempting to access data which is being modified by another program which is running at the same time.

Below are some other possible reasons and the exact messages associated with them.
ERROR

MPREXE caused an invalid page fault in module (unknown) at (address).

When you attempt to connect to shared folder by clicking Start, clicking Run, typing the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path to the folder in the Open box, and then clicking OK, you may receive this message.

CAUSE
This error message can occur if the share name of the folder to which you are attempting to connect contains more than 46 characters.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, rename the folder's share name using less than 46 characters, or contact your network administrator.

ERROR

Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.dll at (xxxx:xxxxxxxx)
-or-
Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module unknown.

When you attempt to open Control Panel, an invalid page fault may occur in Kernel32.dll. You may receive one of these messages.

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if a Control Panel extension (.cpl) file is damaged.
ERROR
When you start your computer, you may receive the following error message:

Explorer:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

If you then click Details, you may see the following information:

EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module EXPLORER.EXE at (memory address).

CAUSE
This problem can sometimes occur if the Microsoft Windows 95 version of the Explorer.exe file is located in the root folder of drive C.
